Riverside Cemetery: A Historical Journey

Riverside Cemetery dates back to 1827, when William Conner, founder of Conner Prairie, donated the land to Hamilton County. The cemetery was first mentioned in city records on June 26, 1851; however, the earliest known burial marker dates to 1824. From its inception, it was never a segregated cemetery, serving as a final resting place for all members of the community.

In 1909, ownership was transferred to the City of Noblesville, which expanded the grounds over the following decades. By 1930, the cemetery had reached its current size.

Riverside Cemetery is also notable for its connection to the Civil War. Seventy-five Union soldiers are buried here, and according to Burgess’ Civil War Veteran Burial Guide, it is the final resting place of both the first and last Civil War veterans from Hamilton County. In May 2008, the City of Noblesville dedicated a memorial to all veterans, including those buried in Riverside Cemetery.

Today, the cemetery is managed by the City of Noblesville Street Department and remains active, though new plots are only available in the newer south section.
