Strong drawings begin with strong observation. In this foundational class, you'll learn to see like an artist by exploring the essential building blocks of drawing. Through a series of approachable exercises using graphite and charcoal on newsprint, you'll practice creating confident lines, understanding value, and using the full range from rich darks to bright highlights. We'll also explore figure/ground relationships learning how positive and negative space work together to create balanced, compelling compositions. Whether you're new to drawing or looking to strengthen your fundamentals, this class will help you develop the skills and confidence to create drawings with greater depth, clarity, and impact. Perfect for beginners or artists wanting to refresh the core principles that make every great drawing successful. Supplies Needed: - Newsprint pad - Full value range of graphite pencils, or - Charcoal Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026 Time: 1:00-5:00 PM Age Requirements: Adult (18+) with beginner to intermediate experience Artist Bio: Mark earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University before receiving his Master of Fine Arts from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. He then spent three years as an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Evansville. After relocating to Indianapolis in 1990, Mark explored opportunities to combine art and emerging computer technology, a path that ultimately led to a career in project management and information technology. Following a decade focused on raising his family, he returned to his artistic practice with a studio at the Stutz Business Center, where he spent twelve years reconnecting with making art and exhibiting his work. Today, Mark works from his studio in McCordsville, Indiana, and continues to exhibit in solo exhibitions, group shows, juried exhibitions, and art fairs throughout the Midwest. Cancellation within seven or more days' notice prior to the start date of the 1st class is 95% refunded (represents 5% transaction fee). Cancellation with two to six days' notice is 45% refunded (includes 5% transaction fee). Cancellation with less than 24 hours notice is 0% refunded but registration is transferrable.
