Description

Discover the secrets behind what makes an image truly captivating! This workshop is designed for photographers, painters, and two-dimensional artists of all kinds who want to strengthen their visual storytelling through effective composition. Through a guided presentation and discussion, you’ll explore the essential “rules” of composition—those time-tested principles that help artists create balance, harmony, and visual impact in their work. Learn how elements like line, shape, rhythm, contrast, and focal point work together to draw the viewer’s eye and enhance your creative intent. Participants are welcome (but not required) to bring a photograph or painting large enough to be seen by the group for an optional critique and discussion on how compositional principles apply to their specific image. This interactive portion may extend the workshop slightly, depending on participation. Each participant will receive a pocket-sized laminated reference card outlining key composition guidelines to keep in their studio or camera bag. Bottled water will be provided; participants are welcome to bring a light snack if desired. Special Tie-In: During the time of this class, the Captured Light Photography Exhibit will be on display in the gallery. Participants are encouraged to spend time with the exhibit before or after the workshop to see compositional principles in action. From dynamic use of contrast and shadow to intentional focal points and leading lines, the exhibit offers a real-world opportunity to analyze how artists harness light and composition to create powerful, evocative images. This immersive connection between instruction and exhibition makes for a rich, layered learning experience. Date: Saturday, March 21, 2026 Time: 2:00 - 4:00 pm Age Requirements: Adults (16+) with beginning to intermediate experience Supply List: A photograph or painting large enough to be seen by the group for an optional critique.
