Alys is an anthropologist, artist, and writer. Alys has an MA in Anthropology and taught Anthropology and Women’s Studies at Ball State University for several years. She was a PhD candidate in Applied Linguistics until her disabilities worsened. In 2010, she formed Sacred Heart of the Rose, an IRS-approved all-volunteer non-denominational spiritual organization. Alys serves on the Noblesville Cultural Arts Council and is active in the local arts scene. In 2011, she began selling artwork online and locally, and was juried into the Hamilton County Artists' Association in both photography (2012) and 2D categories (2013). She is the co-founder of NICE (Noblesville Interdisciplinary Creativity Expo), which is in its 5th year in 2019; in 2018 NICE received an Indiana Humanities project grant. In November of 2014, she founded Logan Street Sanctuary, Inc., an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) Arts organization providing the community with diverse arts projects and programming. In 2019, Logan Street Sanctuary, Inc. rebranded as Community • Education • Arts, Inc., expanding globally with digital content projects including online exhibit opportunities for creatives of all kinds, a podcast, and a short videos series. Alys is editor/publisher of the annual submissions-driven anthology, The Polk Street Review, which has received three Indiana Arts Commission project grants (2018, 2019, and 2020).

Alys is an Indiana Arts Commission Individual Artist Project Grant Award recipient (FY2017), for which she created 16 large paintings expressing Life With Hidden Disabilities. She was selected for the IUPUI Arts and Humanities Institute’s Religion Spirituality, and the Arts 2018/19 Seminar Class, has been an invited presenter at Poetry Society of Indiana conferences (2017, 2018, 2019), and Monicat Data’s arts and technology Yellow Summit (2019). Alys' artwork, photographs, and poetry have received national and international recognition.

Personal Note: I love to paint textured acrylic pieces ~ lately, I've been doing a lot of abstract and semi-abstract paintings. I enjoy photographing nature, people, and the smaller details of the world I see. I accept painting commissions happily, and will do my best to honor your original photo or idea in the process of creating YOUR new piece of art in my own style!
