Sabrina Zhou was born in Chonqing, China. Holding her BFA and 2 MFAs, she has always taken art as the central focus in life. Sabrina and her family have lived in Carmel, IN since 2010 and has enjoyed every minute of her life here with her 2 wonderful kids. Sabrina has commenced her career as a full-time portrait artist for more than 2 decades. Collectors from all over the country value the beauty, sensitivity and likeness of her portrait works. She has been a devoted portrait artist for Fallen Heroes project, CT, for more than 15 years. During the Covid-19 era, Sabrina offered free portraits to Covid victims. She finished more than 50 portraits to the families that lost their loved ones to the pandemic. In recent years, her desire to paint still life and landscapes eventually took over. Painting in pastel, acrylic and oil, Sabrina has developed her own technique, resulting in remarkable depth and luminance. A quiet introspection highlights the implication in her still life and landscape work. Sabrina's works have been shown in many national and international exhibitions and have won many awards. To name a few, she has been recognized at The Indiana Artist Club Annual Exhibition, Hoosier Salon Annual Exhibition,The Adirondack National Pastel Exhibition, Annual Exhibition of Pastel Society of America, and Annual Exhibition of Oil Painters of America.
About the Class
As a mother of two, I don't have many opportunities to do plain-air. I always pay attention to what's around me and what moves me. And I look, and memorize. I use that together with my reference photos to finish my landscape paintings in my studio.
Day 1.
I want to share with artists how to see and avoid seeing too much... The method of "subtraction". We will start by viewing a lot of photos and discussing how to use them. It takes about an hour for the talking and showing. Then I will let the audience choose 3 reference photos and I will demonstrate how to get a palm-size color study using the simplifying method. It will take 15 minutes each. That will conclude our first morning.
Lunch starts at 12 pm and finishes at 1pm.
In the afternoon, each painter will choose a reference and start with a palm-size color study. It takes 30 minutes. Then we will develop a small landscape painting by the end of the day.
Day 2
Painters will bring their own reference photos and we will exchange ideas of how to improve them to produce better-looking landscapes. Meanwhile, we will prepare a larger canvas to use. It takes about 1 hour.
Palm-size color study. 30mins.
Composition and rough outline. 30mins.
Lunch starts at 12 pm and finishes at 1pm.
In the afternoon, we will be busy creating! Hopefully everyone will end up with a masterpiece landscape to bring home!
